1. An improved method for generating an eight-level modulating signal in transmitter apparatus for a digital television broadcast signal manifested as an electromagnetic wave subjected to vestigial sideband amplitude modulation in accordance with said eight-level modulating signal said method comprising steps of:

  • generating 207-byte Reed-Solomon codewords from 187-byte packets beginning with respective 3-byte headers and concluding with respective 184-byte contents;

    convolutionally interleaving bytes of successive ones of said 207-byte Reed-Solomon codewords;

    two-thirds trellis coding of convolutionally byte-interleaved 207-byte Reed-Solomon codewords to form said eight-level modulating signal;

    parallel concatenated convolutional coding ancillary digital data to generate first parity bits from first substep of convolutional coding said ancillary digital data and to generate second parity bits from a second substep of convolutional coding said ancillary digital data;

    temporally interleaving said data bits of said parallel concatenated convolutional coding with said first and said second sets of parity bits of said parallel concatenated convolutional coding for encapsulation in selected ones of said 187-byte packets; and

    encapsulating within said selected ones of said 187-byte packets said data bits of said parallel concatenated convolutional coding as temporally interleaved with said first and said second sets of parity bits of said parallel concatenated convolutional coding.
