An Internet interface provided by an internet web server provides web pages presents in a manner which is tailored to an individual user. The interface provides web site navigation data to the user in accordance with personal preferences provided by the user. A site map program function then provides web site navigation data to the user, in order to provide a display depicting portions of the web site visited by the user.

a user portion of the interface comprising a data file generated from user activity based on user data transmitted in response in part to user selections of a plurality of user-selectable fields, each field for describing a personal characteristic of said user and automatic transmission of data corresponding to the user selections upon initially accessing said web pages, wherein an analysis of the user selections provides a selection of plurality of discrete sections specifically tailored for said user; and
the plurality of discrete sections generating said site map according to at least one of a route which the person has gone or the plurality of discrete sections tailored for said user, thereby providing a diagram in accordance with the user selections. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10)

11. A method for providing information through a web server capable of providing web pages accessed from a web site in a manner which presents the web pages tailored to an individual user, the method comprising:

generating web site navigation data specific to the user by automatically transmitting user profile information over the Internet to an information provider upon accessing said web site;
providing the generated web site navigation data to the user; and

The method of claim 12 wherein the display depicting portions of the web site visited by the user includes an indication of web pages visited by the user, presented as a picture-in-picture window within the screen in combination with at least a portion of the entire web site accessible by the user.

15-1. An Internet interface comprising a user unit and a web page unit for interfacing an information user with an information provider;
- said information provider providing at least N discrete data streams, the interface comprising;
said user unit comprising;
means for automatically generating an information user profile having at least one user-selectable data field, said at least one user-selectable data field; and
means for automatically transmitting said information user profile over the Internet to the information provider upon accessing said information provider; and
said web page unit comprising;
means for receiving said information user profile;
means for analyzing said information user profile with respect to N discrete data streams; and
for each of said N discrete data streams, means for selecting one data stream specifically tailored for each user from among a plurality of mutually exclusive data streams located within each of the N discrete data streams and outputting said selected data stream, said selection being in response to said analysis of the received information user profile.
