1. In a wireless communication system including a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and a Node-B, a method for selectively providing channel assignment information for an enhanced uplink (EU) channel and a high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) channel, the method comprising:

the Node-B transmitting channel assignment information to the WTRU for assigning radio resources for the WTRU;

the WTRU receiving the channel assignment information;

the WTRU determining whether the channel assignment information is for assigning the radio resources for the EU channel or the HSDPA channel; and

the WTRU utilizing the radio resources for one of the EU channel and the HSDPA channel.

Abstract

A method and wireless communication system for providing channel assignment information used to support an uplink (UL) channel and a downlink (DL) channel. The system includes at least one Node-B and at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). The WTRU communicates with the Node-B via a common control channel, the UL channel and the DL channel. The WTRU receives a message from the Node-B via the common control channel. The message includes an indication of whether the message is intended for assigning radio resources to the UL channel or the DL channel. The WTRU determines whether the message is intended for the WTRU and, if so, the WTRU determines whether the message is for assigning radio resources to the UL channel or the DL channel. The WTRU takes an appropriate action based on whether the message is for assigning radio resources to the UL channel or the DL channel.

- the Node-B transmitting channel assignment information to the WTRU for assigning radio resources for the WTRU;

  the WTRU determining whether the channel assignment information is for assigning the radio resources for the EU channel or the HSDPA channel; and
  
  the WTRU utilizing the radio resources for one of the EU channel and the HSDPA channel.

- - 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the channel assignment information is transmitted via a common control channel.
  - 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the common control channel is a high speed shared control channel (HS-SCCH) for HSDPA.
  - 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the Node-B sends the channel assignment information using seven (7) bits for total of 128 combinations among which 120 combinations are used for HSDPA and eight (8) combinations are used for EU.
  - 5. The method of claim 3 wherein the Node-B attaches a first WTRU-specific cyclic redundancy check (CRC) to the channel assignment information for the HSDPA channel and attaches a second WTRU-specific CRC to the channel assignment information for the EU channel, the second WTRU-specific CRC being modified from the first WTRU-specific CRC.
  - 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the second WTRU-specific CRC is an inverted version of the first WTRU-specific CRC.
  - 7. The method of claim 3 wherein the Node-B performs masking of the channel assignment information for the HSDPA channel with a first WTRU-specific code sequence and performs masking of the channel assignment information for the EU channel with a second WTRU-specific code sequence.
  - 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the second WTRU-specific code sequence is an inverted version of the first WTRU-specific code sequence.
  - 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the Node-B transmits an indication whether the channel assignment information is for the HSDPA channel or the EU channel via a dedicated channel (DCH).
  - 10. The method of claim 1 wherein the WTRU determines whether the channel assignment information is for the HSDPA channel or the EU channel based on a radio resource control (RRC) context signaling.
  - 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the RRC context signaling indicates which transmission time interval (TTI) is for transmitting channel assignment information for the EU channel and which TTI is for transmitting channel assignment information for the HSDPA channel.

12. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) for selectively utilizing channel assignment information for one of an enhanced uplink (EU) channel and a high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) channel, the WTRU comprising:
- a receiver for receiving channel assignment information from a Node-B; and
  
  a controller for determining whether the channel assignment information is for assigning the radio resources for the EU channel or the HSDPA channel.

- - 13. The WTRU of claim 12 wherein the receiver receives the channel assignment information via a common control channel.
  - 14. The WTRU of claim 13 wherein the common control channel is a high speed shared control channel (HS-SCCH) for HSDPA.
  - 15. The WTRU of claim 14 wherein the Node-B sends the channel assignment information using seven (7) bits for total of 128 combinations among which 120 combinations are used for HSDPA and eight (8) combinations are used for EU.
  - 16. The WTRU of claim 14 wherein the controller decodes a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) attached to the channel assignment information, and if the CRC is a first WTRU-specific CRC, the controller determines the channel assignment information is for the HSDPA channel and if the CRC is a second WTRU-specific CRC, the controller determines the channel assignment information is for the EU channel, the second WTRU-specific CRC being modified from the first WTRU-specific CRC.
  - 17. The WTRU of claim 16 wherein the second WTRU-specific CRC is an inverted version of the first WTRU-specific CRC.

The WTRU of claim 14 wherein the Node-B performs masking of the channel assignment information with a masking code sequence, and if the controller determines that the masking code sequence is a first WTRU-specific code sequence the controller determines the channel assignment information is for the HSDPA channel and if the controller determines that the masking code sequence is a second WTRU-specific code sequence, the WTRU determines that the channel assignment information is for the EU channel.
  - 19. The WTRU of claim 18 wherein the second WTRU-specific code sequence is an inverted version of the first WTRU-specific code sequence.
  - 20. The WTRU of claim 12 wherein the receiver receives an indication whether the channel assignment information is for the HSDPA channel or the EU channel via a dedicated channel (DCH).
  - 21. The WTRU of claim 12 wherein the controller determines whether the channel assignment information is for the HSDPA channel or the EU channel based on a radio resource control (RRC) context signaling.
  - 22. The WTRU of claim 21 wherein the RRC context signaling indicates which transmission time interval (TTI) is for transmitting channel assignment information for the EU channel and which TTI is for transmitting channel assignment information for the HSDPA channel.

23. A Node-B for selectively providing channel assignment information to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) for an enhanced uplink (EU) channel and a high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) channel, the Node-B comprising:
- a scheduler for generating channel assignment information to assign a radio resource to the WTRU for one of the EU channel and the HSDPA channel; and
  
  a transmitter for transmitting the channel assignment information to the WTRU, the channel assignment information enabling the WTRU to determine whether the channel assignment information is for assigning the radio resources for the EU channel or the HSDPA channel.

  - 28. The Node-B of claim 27 wherein the second WTRU-specific CRC is an inverted version of the first WTRU-specific CRC.
  - 29. The Node-B of claim 25 wherein the transmitter performs masking of the channel assignment information for the HSDPA channel with a first WTRU-specific code sequence and performs masking of the channel assignment information for the EU channel with a second WTRU-specific code sequence.
  - 30. The Node-B of claim 29 wherein the second WTRU-specific code sequence is an inverted version of the first WTRU-specific code sequence.
  - 31. The Node-B of claim 23 wherein the transmitter transmits an indication whether the channel assignment information is for the HSDPA channel or the EU channel via a dedicated channel (DCH).
  - 32. The Node-B of claim 23 wherein the transmitter transmits the channel assignment information based on a radio resource control (RRC) context signaling.
  - 33. The Node-B of claim 32 wherein the transmitter transmits the channel assignment information for the HSDPA channel on one of an even and odd transmission time interval (TTI) and transmits the channel assignment information for the EU channel on the other TTI.
